MedVint in Turkey are currently providing immediate medical support to more than 5,000 refugees in the Greater Izmir area who are scattered in 18 different informal camps. In one makeshift tent there is normally an extended family that includes grandparents, aunts and uncles, children and grandchildren living in one single room. In order to reach out to all these camps MedVint volunteers travel around 200km across the region. Almost every day the volunteers are discovering new camps. Some are not more than 10 or 20 meters distance from a main street.
The medical team treats respiratory diseases, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, colds, cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, skin diseases caused by poor access to hygiene, general pain, sprains, dislocations, minor accidents, care of old war wounds, malnutrition, etc. There are also a lot of pregnant women, babies and toddlers, who receive check ups.
A few weeks ago Help Refugees supported MedVint to buy a mobile ultrasound doppler. You cannot imagine how happy an expectant mother is when she can hear the heartbeat of her baby during a simple check up in her tent! The stress and worry of being a refugee – homeless and fleeing war or persecution – is stress no mother should have to experience.
This week the Medvint team found a new camp with 120 families and a girl with high fever. They treated the girl and when they revisited the camp yesterday found that she was already much better.
Your donations are making a real difference. We would not be able to support organisations like Medvint without your help. Thank you.
We would not be able to do our work without your support and kindness. Many of the refugees we help are fleeing the conflict zones of Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. Others are trying to escape political oppression in countries like Eritrea. All are human beings like us. As well as providing immediate physical assistance, we want to help refugees maintain their dignity.
